“There’s no single way to solve a problem—what matters is finding the solution that works.”

Time to Challenge the Status Quo

Let’s step back for a moment.

What if we removed, or at the very least, reframed safety as a function within business? Not the outcome. Not the goal. But the structure, policies, initiatives, slogans, and silver-bullet solutions that claim to “manage” safety.

What if, instead of obsessing over safety as a thing to control, we focused that energy on something deeper? Leadership that actually leads. A culture that connects. Trust that’s real. Resilience that matters.

The systems that manage critical risk would, of course, remain. That’s a no-brainer. But everything else? What if stripping away the bureaucracy made workplaces safer?

Maybe we’ve been on the wrong path all along.

Maybe all of the layers we’ve built around safety/risk management/environment aren’t protecting it at all. Maybe they’re suffocating it.

Think about it for a moment. Safety isn’t a policy, a checklist, or a compliance box to tick. It’s an outcome. An outcome of:

  • How well we communicate open and honestly (unfiltered truth) and not how many layers the information has to travel.

  • How effectively we build leadership.

  • How we support and listen.

  • How openly we acknowledge the people who actually do the work.

Real safety happens through purposeful conversations, not more initiatives, not more policies, but genuine engagement. Because when people actually give a damn, change happens.

So here’s the tough question: Has the function of safety become the biggest barrier to actual safety?

We all see it, safety performance has plateaued. In some cases, it’s getting worse. So, are these layers of process making things better?

Or are they suffocating safety altogether?

Strategies to Make This Work:

  • Empower Leadership at All Levels – Train and support leaders to make safety an inherent part of their role, not a separate function.

  • Simplify Processes – Strip back excessive bureaucracy and focus on what truly mitigates risk.

  • A shift from Compliance to Commitment – Move beyond checklists and ensure safety is built on genuine buy-in, not forced adherence.

  • Encourage Open Conversations – Create spaces where workers feel safe to raise concerns and share ideas without fear.

  • Recognise and Reward Real Contributions – Acknowledge workers for proactive safety actions, not just compliance.

  • Integrate Safety into Business Success – Connect safety outcomes directly to operational excellence and performance.

  • Focus on Critical Risk Management – Prioritize high-risk hazards over minor infractions to prevent serious incidents.

By challenging the status quo and putting people at the centre of safety, we might just unlock the real change we’ve been looking for, all along.
